What to expect from hiking Angels Landing in Zion National Park

This video by Zach Friedbauer gives an excellent look into what it takes to hike Angels Landing in Zion National Park. Angels Landing is on the top of my to do list – it just looks incredible. Not only the views but with all the surrounding wildlife.

The trail to Angels Landing is 2.4 miles (3.9 km) long. It begins at the Grotto drop off point on the park’s shuttle system. It roughly follows the path of the Virgin River for some time, slowly gaining elevation in sandy terrain. As the trail gets steeper and leaves behind the river, it becomes paved. After a series of steep switchbacks, the trail goes through the area between Angels Landing and the Zion Canyon that is a gradual ascent. Walter’s Wiggles, a series of 21 steep switchbacks, are the last hurdle before Scout Lookout. Scout Lookout is generally the turnaround point for those who are unwilling to make the final summit push to the top of Angels Landing. The last half-mile of the trail is strenuous and littered with sharp drop offs and narrow paths. Chains to grip are provided for portions of the last half-mile to the top at 5,790 feet (1,760 m). Filmed and Edited by: Zach Friedbauer. Starring: Shane Stutzman. Filmed on a Canon DSLR.

2013 5Point Film Festival Winners

The annual 5Point Film Festival was last weekend – bringing to you some of the best outdoor films of the year. Some we’ve already seen, like Joy of Air, and others had their world premier, like Road to Karakol. Road to Karakol actually won best of the festival.

Here’s a highlight reel from all the winning films. It is truly awesome and inspiring to watch such great work.

Like Father, Like Son

Reddit user ImS0hungry posted this photo of his pack, and the pack he just picked up for his 6 year old son. Some might call him the world’s greatest dad.

My son is almost 2 years old… I can’t wait until he’s old enough to strap on a pack and hit the trail with his old man.

Home Sweet Road on Display

THe Dirtbag Diaries’ Home Sweet Road T-Shirt was recently on display at a photoshoot in the Fruita Mountains of Colorado. I love this light blue t-shirt, featuring an old pickup (some might say it’s the ghost of Crash) w/ a canoe on top and the words underneath it read “Home Sweet Road.”

In The High Country Film

This guy instantly reminded me of Forest Gump running across the country – except Gump wasn’t nearly as hardcore. Check out Anton running through the mountains in the upcoming film In The High Country

Anton Krupicka’s running has evolved from trails to mountains to free-soloing. Filmed over a season “In the High Country” — thin air, river baths, and itinerant mountain living. A new short film from the Wolpertinger coming Summer 2013.
